To take refuge is not to do it verbally only but to contemplate in your mind. How do you do that? It is not to contemplate just the image of Buddha but to calm down, contemplate Śākyamuni, world-honored one, in front of you and pray to Him. You can also ponder on good qualities of Śākyamuni, which would be enough to have miraculous effects on you. – Master Jih Chang
