Failure is the cause of success. This is not just a slogan since failures can increase your own abilities. After that, you can have more confidence. Such ever-growing confidence is your “mind of pure faith”. If you keep moving forward, difficulties will still persist in every step you make. However, due to your improved abilities and confidence, your steps get firmer and firmer and get you elevated appropriately. – Master Jih Chang

Whatever you do, it takes actual actions to create problems and let you see them. It is the only time when you can find where things go wrong, find the antidote and solve the problems. Then you can move toward success step by step. Therefore, “failure” is absolutely necessary. – Master Jih Chang

Having such wrongful conception, we are creating causes for Dharma’s Demise. Now that the true Dharma is on the wane, how could we proceed with such causes? When Buddha Dharma is decaying, discussing without practicing makes knowledge become conceptual proliferation. Practicing without proper knowledge, practice also becomes conceptual proliferation. It is because neither of them can be fruitful. – Master Jih Chang

To eliminate our karmic impressions since the beginningless time, the whole cultivation can be concluded as “precepts” – to use the disciplines created by the Buddha to have introspection constantly. Thus we can find our bottleneck through the interaction with the guru and fellow practitioners and correct our karmic impressions with their advices and encouragement. – Master Jih Chang

◎無始以來習氣的力量非常強大，就像我們坐在火車上，根本不覺得火車在動，住在地球上，絕對看不見地球在轉，雖然看不見事情的真相，但我們坐在火車上卻跟著火車動，住在地球上，卻跟著地球轉，我們隨著業流走而無可奈何，這就是當你想去努力皈依的時候，卻提不起來的原因，所以不以強大力量去思惟的話，不可能策動我們去受皈依戒。【日常師父法語】

Our habitual behavior from the beginningless time is very strong. It is just like our not feeling the train moving when we are on the train and not seeing the Earth spinning when we live on the Earth. We appear helpless in the flow of karma, which is why you cannot give rise to your aspiration when striving to take refuge. Therefore, if we do not ponder with great momentum, it is unlikely to motivate us to receive the precepts of refuge. – Master Jih Chang

Since we want to learn the deliberation of teaching and realization, we must understand the exceptional importance of “teaching”. It is unlikely for the Buddha not to rescue us. However, when we reach out for help, we do not turn to the Buddha but follow our own karmic impressions instead. What we see with our eyes and minds all concentrate on such impressions, which is our fatal vulnerability.  – Master Jih Chang

◎造業是一生一生積累的，積了無始到了今天，我們怎麼可能一口氣把它拿乾淨。同樣的，做功德也是一分一分做。假定拿世間的法來說，經無始時間積累的惡業，要淨化它，還是無始時間。那實在是天文數字，很可怕。佛法的真正珍貴在此，前面積的無始罪業，如果努力的話，短短的幾生當中，比之於無始的話，比出來的數字，……不能比的，我們要了解這一點。【日常師父法語】

Creating karmas is an accumulative process that goes on lifetime after lifetime, from beginningless time to the present. How could we cancel them out once and for all? Likewise, merit-making also needs to be done little by little. From the perspective of worldly dharma, it takes infinite time to purity evil karmas accumulated for infinite time, which is terrifying. This is the most precious part of the Buddha Dharma. If you work diligently, you can cancel out the accumulated nonvirtuous karmas in merely a couple of lifetimes, which is incomparable to that beginningless time. We simply have to understand this. – Master Jih Chang

In theory, I also want to clean away sins and collect merits. However, my habitual behavior makes me evaluate things by worldly standards. The purpose of Buddha Dharma is to uproot the issue of suffering. What is the kernel deep at the bottom of humans? If it is not found, suffering will be inevitable. All the worldly happiness is a bait deceiving us. We think it is happiness and swallow it. When take one, we get caught by one. The most pitiful is that worldly people do not understand and are unaware of this. – Master Jih Chang

The most essential parts in learning Buddha Dharma are the three trainings – discipline, meditation, and wisdom. To obtain wisdom requires hearing, thinking, and practicing. Starting from hearing, we improve gradually through thinking, practicing and then realization. Therefore, the instruction in “approach to hearing” is exceptionally important for us. To observe pure precepts requires rightful understanding about afflictions. Without fighting against afflictions, precepts can never be pure. – Master Jih Chang

If we wholeheartedly want to help all sentient beings gain salvation, the most precious things is to change ourselves and strive to do so. People normally have difficulty repenting and improving because they cling to the habitual ways and shrink back, which keeps them from standing up and taking actions. – Master Jih Chang

Householders should make use of the opportunities at present to improve the conditions around themselves. Why not we shall take care of the young or be filial to our parents? Of course we should, but in what way should we do so? This is the essential question. If every single mother not only cares about her children but also does so correctly and if every single child cares about his parents in return correctly, it will not be long before the whole world is at peace. When we practice on what we have learned, we shall hold on to a principle. That is, “the achievement is about what we feel inside our minds instead of the results that other people see.” Concerning our conceptions, if we can gradually replace our afflicted habitual behaviors with the rightful conceptions of Buddha’s teaching and cause such conceptions to develop, that is our true achievement.  – Master Jih Chang

From a Buddhist viewpoint, the worldly standard for success and failure is infatuated. However, I would rather not ignore nor deny such standard. Yet we should first clarify the essence of success, target at the right direction and go ahead. Worldly affairs are evaluated by their results. Whether something is success or failure depends on how most people look at it. The most precious part in Buddhism is that it is mainly about the true “cause” of success. Yet it does not follow that Buddhism has no concern about “result” at all. Just because we want the correct result, we need to find the correct cause first and then work on it. Following such procedure, good results will surely come along. – Master Jih Chang

Cultivation is long-term effort instead of something that can be achieved hurriedly in one day or two, in seven days, or in a year. The correct perception of Buddha’s teaching cannot be obtained in one life, either. On the contrary, our own success is also accumulated thought by thought, minute by minute, day by day, year by year, and life after life. – Master Jih Chang

◎找不到善知識，最大的主因是自己未具足弟子相。如果我們能夠事事反觀諸己，進而淨化自己，自然能夠找到善知識，因為佛菩薩一直在我們面前，只是自己障礙未除，看不到罷了。【日常師父法語】

The main reason for our inability to find a guru is our own lack of characteristics as disciples. If we can frequently reflect and seek the cause in ourselves and thus purify ourselves, we will naturally find our guru. This is because Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have always been around us. Yet we cannot see Them since our own obscurations have not been cleared away. – Master Jih Chang
