◎佛法告訴我們要這樣做，可是無始以來的習慣覺得不一定要這樣做，理論上說要照著佛法，實際上卻隨著習氣轉，而且習氣會找出好多種理由來教我們應該這樣去做，這是我們的致命傷。【日常師父法語】

The Buddha’s teaching tells us to do so, but our habitual behaviors from the beginningless time let us think of it as unnecessary. In theory we say we will follow the Buddha’s teaching, but in fact we are driven by our habituated tendencies. And the tendencies will find lots of excuses to make us do this and do that, which is our fatal mistake. – Master Jih Chang

If we do not want to waste our infinite lives and if we do not want to keep creating evil karmas due to our ignorance and losing control of our suffering and happiness, we shall strive to learn deeply the path that the Buddha takes to enlighten and benefit ourselves and others and pursue perfectly complete enlightenment and practice to achieve Buddhahood. – Master Jih Chang

The Buddha tells us what to do and what not to do, and we do pass on what the Buddha says to other people. Sometimes we can even recite fluently. We keep talking about theories, but, when practicing on them, it is not the case at all. Let’s just ask ourselves: do we really do what the Buddha says or do we just follow our habits? Are we observing precepts or breaking them?  – Master Jih Chang

What is the most integral part of karma? It is our mentality. If our minds remain lax and casual, there will not be strong momentum. When the mental power is great, the momentum will be strong, too. The greater our minds are, the stronger momentum we have. If we do good activities with strong mental power, there will be amazingly huge collection of merits. – Master Jih Chang

◎要怎樣才曉得老師是好、是不好呢？要怎樣才可以遇到好老師呢？這牽涉到兩方面，以世間來說，運氣；以佛法來說，業。造了什麼業，就感得什麼果；造了和好老師相應的業，就感得好老師攝受的果。因為業是我們自己造的，所以歸根究底還是在我們自己。【日常師父法語】

How do we know whether a guru is good or not? How do we have a good guru? This will involve two things. From a worldly perspective, fortune; from a Buddhist perspective, karma. Whatever karmas you create will lead you to such results. If you create the karmas that make you associated with a good guru, you attain the result of receiving the teaching from him. Since we create our own karmas, everything is on ourselves after all.  – Master Jih Chang

The first step to learn one thing is to submit our own opinions to the directions of the Guru and get elevated. In the path of cultivation, since we keep in mind the concept to follow at every single step, the experience obtained in the process of practice keeps accumulating constantly. Since the beginningless time, we only know about ourselves and have our own habituated tendencies. The purpose of learning Buddha’s teaching is to eliminate them thoroughly. If not, there is no way to learn Buddha’s teaching and we can never perform to the best of our abilities. – Master Jih Chang

◎法是佛母，諸佛沒有一個例外，都是從佛法，聽聞佛法，照著佛法行持，從法出生的，所以我們對於法，要無比的恭敬。講法的人或有高下，法卻是諸佛的教誡，要辨別清楚。法有大小、顯密、性相的差別，應機的不同，圓滿一樣，每一個各有它特別的適應性，千萬不要妄加是非。【日常師父法語】

The Dharma is the mother of all Buddhas, and there is no exception. They all come from the Dharma, listen to the Dharma, act in accordance with the Dharma, and rise from the Dharma. Therefore, we must have immeasurable respect for the Dharma. The achievement of Dharma preachers can be high or low. Yet the Dharma is the teaching of all Buddhas so we must discern clearly. There are differences in Dharmas like Mahayana and Theravada, Exoteric and Esoteric teachings and among all characteristics. They are associated with different things, but the perfection and completeness are the same. Each kind has its own specific adaptation, and we must not make presumptuous comments out of ignorance. – Master Jih Chang

◎我們修學佛法的時候，除了要有完整的理論、具足條件的善知識，最重要的是我們要對善知識有絕對的信心，也就是「淨信心」，如果這個條件不具足，學佛不可能學得好，菩提道不可能走得上去。【日常師父法語】

When we are learning Buddha Dharma, we need not only the perfectly complete theory and gurus with defining characteristics in their entirety. The most important of all is to have absolute confidence on our Guru, namely the “mind of pure faith”. If we do not meet such characteristic, we are unlikely to learn Buddha Dharma well, not mentioning taking the Path of Enlightenment. – Master Jih Chang

Our guru and fellow practitioners are the indispensable partners on the path of cultivation. As Confucius said: friends who are just, honest and knowledgeable. Friends who give forthright admonitions can help us recognize ourselves and overcome the constraints from karmic impressions. If we seek cultivation without getting rid of our karmic impressions, that will be harming ourselves and cheating others. – Master Jih Chang

◎修學佛法兩個必要條件，第一個「正知見」，第二個「精進行」。以為聽懂了，覺得一點都沒錯，可是得到正知見了嗎？「還沒有！」那是人家告訴你的。當思相應慧生起的時候，就有了正知見。有了正知見，如果不精進，仍在原地踏步，還是沒有用。所以真正要求無上菩提的人，一定要勇悍。【日常師父法語】

There are two necessary conditions to learn Buddha Dharma: one is "rightful conceptions" and the other is "diligent practices". We thought we understood everything and we were completely correct. Yet did we really obtain the rightful conception? "Not Yet". That is what people told you. When we give rise to the wisdom of correspondence, we obtain the rightful conceptions. It will not work when we only have rightful conceptions but were not diligent and remain the same. Therefore, those who wants to achieve the unsurpassed enlightenment must be perseverant.  – Master Jih Chang

If you want to learn something well, you have to meet such condition – to abandon bad habits. If we cannot abandon our previous habits and thoughts, we can never learn new things. – Master Jih Chang

At start of year, it is even less appropriate for us to indulge ourselves since we should constantly seek for elevation in our infinite lives. When enjoying the good results, we should pursue something more than materials. We have to constantly purify our minds and use the correct methods to establish the society with ten kinds of wholesome behavior. This leads us toward the better next lives so that we can sustain the direct causes of escaping suffering and obtaining happiness. – Master Jih Chang

The best things you want to learn do not rain from sky. Instead, we have to learn with our own efforts. We not only need good teachers to tell us the best ways but also strong determination to follow the teachers and overcome problems one after another. – Master Jih Chang

◎若不能依眾靠眾，處今日強大的逆流中，必被沖走，共同淪墮。所以今以共同為目標能實踐，不但自己守得住，而且能使很多有心人都聚在一起，不但可以擋住逆流，且可以繼續擴大增長、相互輔助而救得很多人，特別可能將有可能的災難淡化掉。【日常師父法語】

If we do not congregate the crowd and work together, we will surely be washed away by the strong adverse current nowadays and sink together. Therefore, now we strive together to carry out our goal. We can not only hold on our position but also unite a lot of determined people. We can not only fight against the adverse current but also grow stronger, help each other and save many others. 如是愛欲人，欲望增亦爾

忘了去年為何會記下這個偈頌，應該是老師或某位法師的開示吧

雖經久受用，境無窮盡際，如惡醫治病，汝身勞無果。如有依土蟲，愛土終不息，如是愛欲人，欲望增亦爾。
《四百論 明破淨執方便品》

這是中觀四百論一段有關世間慾望，尤其是淫慾的論述，莫學粗顯的翻譯如下

Even if you enjoy this for very long time, the desire is endless.
It is like curing disease by an incompetent doctor. Your effort will end up doing nothing beneficial.
It is also like the worm loving earth, which is ceaseless.
Likewise, if you have strong desire for humans, such desire will keep growing stronger and stronger.

Abandoning Belief in Cleanness, Four Hundred Stanzas

然後剛剛找了一下英文版的四百論，翻譯的版本是這樣

Regardless of the amount of time,

Concerning objects there is no limit.

Your exertion for the body's sake

Is, like a bad physician's, useless.

Just as the craving for earth

Does not stop in those that subsist on it,

Similarly, longing for sensual pleasure

Grows in people as they indulge.

After listening to the teaching, what really matters is to practice on it. If we just listen without practice, or if we mistake listening a lot for cultivation, we do have such great fault – piling up words in great numbers without engaging in practice. – Master Jih Chang

◎看到大家空下來、沒什麼事情、說閒話，我心裡面真是代大家覺得可惜，我年輕的時候不曉得用功，現在年紀大了，實在來不及了，恨不得現在一天有九十六小時整天的看書我還嫌少，大家居然把這麼寶貴的時間，拿來聊天，無價的暇滿人身就這樣浪費掉了，說閒話還造罪，好可惜呀！【日常師父法語】

Seeing everyone being at rest, doing nothing and chitchatting, I really feel sorry for you all. When I was young, I did not know to study hard. Now I am really aged, and it seems too late for me. I wish badly that I could have 96 hours to study every day. And now you are using such precious time on chitchatting, which is really great waste of your precious human form of leisure. Talking nonsense and committing crimes, such a great pity. – Master Jih Chang

◎如果一個人修學佛法學得非常好，或依靠自己的善知識，或依靠本尊，這樣魔就沒辦法來傷害他。就好像諸位今天學皈依，這裡面包括依靠善知識，依靠本尊。如果自己真正有了很堅強的信心，有一點力量，能夠一心一意專注，魔是沒辦法傷害你，當我們在學皈依的時候，遇見任何困難，如果能夠至心皈依、供養、祈求，那非人就不會來干擾你，所祈求的願望都能夠獲得。【日常師父法語】

If someone learns Buddha Dharma very well or relies on his guru or the chosen deity, evil demons cannot do him any harm. It is just like everyone here learns to take refuge today, which includes relying on the Guru and chosen deity. If you have strong faith, possess some power and stay focused, the evil demons will not be able to hurt you. When we have any difficulty learning to take refuge, try to take refuge, make offerings and pray wholeheartedly. Then demons will not bother you, and your wishes will all be fulfilled. – Master Jih Chang

◎眼前的快樂是虛幻的，內心深處的茫然會感得以後更多更深的痛苦！實際上，所有的苦樂都源自內心，而我們所有身口意的造作都是為了找尋苦樂問題、解決苦樂問題，如何透過心靈的鍛鍊去感受苦樂？去解決苦樂？就是整個佛法的內涵，而最究竟圓滿解決苦樂問題的是佛。【日常師父法語】

The happiness at present is illusory, and the confusion deep in our minds will only bring us deeper suffering in the future. In fact, all our suffering and happiness come from our minds, and all karmic formations from our actions, languages, and thoughts are to explore and solve the problem of suffering and happiness. How do we, with the training of minds, feel and solve the problem of suffering and happiness? This is the whole essence of Buddha Dharma. And the Buddha is the one who solves such problems the most thoroughly and perfectly. – Master Jih Chang

In actual cultivation, we must really practice on it. If we do not strive to practice, the theory we learn cannot be fulfilled. If it cannot be fulfilled, our confidence will not strengthen. If it does not strengthen, we will not elevate ourselves on the path to Buddhahood. – Master Jih Chang

Why must we collect merits and eliminate sins to learn Buddha Dharma? In the process of learning, we have to train our minds and conceptions and constantly strengthen our minds of pure faith, until we become perseverant. – Master Jih Chang

◎平常我們的心如生牛皮，剛強得不得了，真正善知識如理跟你說的話，你起一念忿恨心，就要多世墮落在地獄中或者生到畜牲當中，所以佛菩薩不在世間，不是佛菩薩不慈悲，不肯來，因為祂一來的話，非把你送下地獄不可。【日常師父法語】

Normally our minds are as tough as raw cowhide. When the Guru is speaking to you correctly, any single thought of anger will make you reborn in hell or as animals for many lives. Therefore, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas do not show themselves in the earthly world not because they are unmerciful or unwilling to come. It is because, when they come, they are very likely to send you down to hell.  – Master Jih Chang
