Among people around us, parents and teachers bring us the greatest and the most direct influence. Their habits and concepts, good or bad, both influence us deeply. In the past, education is to teach people how to be sages and men of virtue. Bodhisattvas are to save others and eventually be saved themselves. 什麼是增上慢呢?就認為自己已經獲得自己尚未獲得的殊勝所證法,心高舉為本性,這就是增上慢。 What is pride in spiritual superiority? It is the false assumption to think of oneself as obtaining the superior realized truth that actually have not been obtained. Then, with such false assumption, one essentially holds himself in high esteem, which is pride in spiritual superiority.

為什麼我們沒有真實地認識,會產生增上慢呢?或者判斷別人判斷錯了,或者判斷自己。 Why do we fail to truly understand the reality and consequently give rise to such pride? Or we misjudge others to be wrong… or misjudge ourselves.

「真實地認識」請問是來源於何處呢?現在我們大家都知道一定要詳盡地、仔細地聽聞教典,然後開始廣泛地去辨析、了解,透過扎實地對教典的學習、對教理的聞思修,我們才能夠知道判斷的界限。 Where do “truly understanding the reality” come from? Now we know we must detailedly and carefully learn from and listen to the scriptures, and then broadly analyze and understand them. Only through solid learning the scriptures, along with listening to, pondering on, and practicing the doctrines, can we distinguish the boundaries of judgement.

Whatever happens to us, we had it coming. We thought we did nothing evil, but it is not necessarily the case. We even take part in a lot of evil activities. Then the “karma” comes back to us, and we suffer for our previous wrongdoings. No doubt we create karmas when doing it consciously. To take refuge is not to do it verbally only but to contemplate in your mind. How do you do that? It is not to contemplate just the image of Buddha but to calm down, contemplate Śākyamuni, world-honored one, in front of you and pray to Him. You can also ponder on good qualities of Śākyamuni, which would be enough to have miraculous effects on you. – Master Jih Chang

Our habitual behavior since beginningless time is so strong that it is like: you don’t feel the train moving when you are in the train and you don’t see the earth spinning when you live on earth. We are easily susceptible to our karma but have no way out. This is why you cannot give rise to the aspiration when you want to take refuge. 談到棄自自在,談何容易啊!自己的習性,會一直把自己拉到自己特別執著的那個地方,所以這個時候要再把自己努力拉回來。

在拉拔的過程中,一不小心對善知識非理作意,會認為善知識不信任自己、不重視自己,甚至會懷疑善知識覺得自己沒用,這樣的心思一旦出現,又沒有及時調整,就會跌入觀察過失、非理作意等等這樣的深淵。

When talking about giving up our independence, it is by no mean easy. Our habitual behavior will draw our attention back to what we are in particular obsessed with. Thus we should strive to pull ourselves back.

In the process of struggle, with recklessness and improper mental orientation toward our gurus, we may think the gurus do not trust nor value us, or even doubt the benefits of the gurus for us. With such mentality and without timely correction, we fall into the abyss of observing faults and improper mental orientation.

Before the start of each class, giving rise to the motivation for listening is an essential habit. I truly hope everyone to cultivate such habit.

However, to cultivate such habit, we need to deliberately train ourselves, or otherwise we will forget about it. After a long time we may even ignore it, considering the benefits of hearing the teaching as unimportant. Then we will actually depreciate the Dharma, which leads very great loss.

我以前曾經問過仁波切說:「我覺得自己有點笨,怎麼樣能夠變得聰明一些呢?怎麼樣可以修成不忘陀羅尼,學什麼馬上都能記住?」

後來仁波切就走到我旁邊,把經典在我頭上輕輕拍了三下,說:「給你不忘陀羅尼了!」然後說:「重複!重複!重複!」

所以重複地學習,可能是我們領會一個我們並不熟悉的、很重要的智慧的辦法。

Once I asked Rinpoche “I think of myself as a little foolish. How can I become smarter? How can I achieve dhāraṇī for forgetting nothing and remember whatever I learn instantly?”

Rinpoche walked toward me and patted my head with the classics three times, saying “Now I have given you dhāraṇī for forgetting nothing.” Then he said “Repeat! Repeat! Repeat!”

Therefore, repetitive learning can be an important and wise way for us to learn something we are unfamaliar with.

Our diets have cause direct harm to our health and the greatest damage to economy. If we can change our diet, the whole environment and our disposition towards acts of violence can also be changed. The instant enjoyment is short while samsara is infinite and painful. People eat for temporary enjoyment and receive endless suffering in exchange. Is this worth it?  – Master Jih Chang

The Late Master taught us to eliminate the evil and obtain the virtuous. The principles have to be very clear. The so-called care and love with indulgence in evil practices are very wrong. Therefore, it is long-term practice for us to find out how to integrate principles of life and influential care and love perfectly.

The feature of filial piety and fraternal duty is -- being considerate -- the true kernel of benevolence and the fundamental spirit of Confucianism. Those with filial piety do not act according to their will only. They do not put themselves in high priority so they become acceptive to the ideas of others and are considerate for them. People like this not only get well along with others but also receive teachings from others easily. Therefore, they can learn a lot.
