Now we are superstitious about science and insist on “seeing is believing.” Yet we are unable to find our own bias. This is like someone who fails to catch any fish where he cast the net and says there is no fish in the sea. – Master Jih Chang

When we practice on what we have learned, we shall hold on to a principle. That is, “the achievement is about what we feel inside our minds instead of the results that other people see.” When we can truly replace our conceptions in mind and our habitual behaviors driven by the afflicted macrocosm with the rightful conceptions of Buddha’s teaching little by little and cause such conceptions to develop, that is not only our true achievement but also the characteristics of high status. – Master Jih Chang

Worldly affairs are normally evaluated by their results only. Their success of failure are measured by what most people recognize. The most precious part in Buddhism is that it is mainly about the true “causes” of success. Yet it does not follow that Buddhism has no concern about “results” at all. Just because we want the correct results, we need to find the correct causes first and then work on them. Following correct procedures, good results will surely come along. – Master Jih Chang

Looking at the merits of others may not always benefit them but will surely benefit yourself. Looking at the faults of others may not always harm them but will surely harm yourself. The most important part of cultivation is to improve ourselves on the basis of our understanding instead of caring about what others think. Yet it is difficult not to care about it since most earthly people are pursuing fortune and fame. In fact, the so-called fame and fortune are defined by comparing ourselves and others.
